Abstract

The usage of wood-base product had been widely use which compose the need to cut on trees and hence contribute too many negative impact towards the living on earth. Other environmental problem that arose was the wastage problem that must be treated by finding the alternative ways on reducing the wastage. This research was conducted to investigate the alternative ways of producing furniture products using bagasse fibre and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) from used plastic bottles as the main material upon producing MDF board using biocomposite. The research aimed to reduce deforestation and lower down the wastage problem by utilizing bagasse and used plastic bottles if it can be use at the industrial level. It was conducted at a basic level and small scale as to investigate the physical and mechanical properties to determine its strength and ability to be use in the furniture or other wood-base industry in general. The research involved laboratory work that uses multiple machines and tools along the production and thee testing of the specimen produced. The production started from the very beginning of fibre extraction from bagasse, chemical treatment, drying, mixing, hot pressing and testing. The testing of the specimen was conducted to determine its physical and mechanical properties which involved weight loss analysis, colour analysis, density test and bending test. From the testing made, the Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) was determined which shows a positive result of the increment of fibre with the increase of density. This means that, the density increase as the fibre content in the specimen increases. It shows that the amount of fibre affects the density and can produce a tougher board. Some of the essential aspects in producing biocomposite product is the distribution of the fibre in the specimen which determined its matrix as well as the resin use to wet the fibre and hold the fibre together. There are multiple ways and aspect that can be use to improve the production of MDF board in order to enhance its physical and mechanical properties which can be done in future research.
