Abstract

Kansei design is a creation of Kansei Engineering during the seventies. It is a Japanese design method used to translate consumer feelings into product parameters. Previously, Kansei design has been used by automotive manufactures. To address this gap, the study incorporated Kansei words than most commonly cited in previous studies related to mobile design. The aim of this study is to identify mostly preferred design for smartphone among iPhone and Samsung users that has been a challenge for the manufacturer of smartphones. The questionnaire was distributed to International and Malaysia postgraduate and undergraduate students from different universities in Malaysia. Quantitative research approach using survey design was adopted. Data was collected using close-ended questionnaires, 268 considered valid for the analysis. Both descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used to analyse the data using SPSS 24 software. The study found that the effect of Kansei design (appearance elements of smartphone and mobile design features) have significantly on individual culture value scale. As a result, appearance elements of smartphone IPhone select Texture as a best appearance while Samsung select Luxuriousness. For best mobile design features both smartphone brand were selected shape of phone as the best rating. The gender have no significant difference towards smartphone brand iPhone and Samsung. But individual culture value scale no significant effect on the smartphone brand iPhone and Samsung. This study found the relationship between Kansei design and individual culture value scale have positively significant to the smartphone brand iPhone and Samsung. Finally the results of this study can contribute to the development of smartphone for manufacturers to know the preferences of design of smartphone for consumer desire between different nationalities.
