Abstract

Manufacturing sector is the most important sector in Malaysia’s economy is evidenced in its contribution to the gross domestic product. The highest total accidents happen in workplace are in manufacturing sector followed by agriculture, forestry, logging, and fishery sector, and construction. Thus, it is important to study how to improve manufacturing safety and productivity. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of 5S and safety attitudes towards hazard among manufacturing workers. Two hypotheses were examined while considering two factors which are 5S and safety attitudes. Research was conducted at Poh Huat Resources Holdings Berhad at Muar, Johor. Poh Huat Resources Holdings Berhad produces home and office furniture such as office cubicle, table, and bed. The respondents are among the workers in the production line and the sample size is 80 workers. Two quantitative approaches were used namely survey questionnaires and structured observation. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The result of this study found that the level of 5S and safety attitudes in Poh Huat Resources Holdings Berhad is in moderate level. Besides that, this study found that there are positively significant relationship between 5S and safety attitudes towards hazard. The important of this study was to give the way on how to improve safety in the furniture manufacturing and show that in important for company to implement 5S and safety attitudes in order to improve safety in the workplace.
