Abstract

Employees in the food industry play a major and important role in order to ensure safe food production and achieve the food safety goals in the food industry. The purpose of this study is to assess the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices on food safety among employees of SME food industry in Malaysia. In addition, this research conducted to determine the differences in knowledge, attitudes and practices on food safety among employees based on demographic characteristics. Three research hypothesis were investigated in this study while considering the demographic characteristics regarding the knowledge, attitudes and practices on food safety which are gender, age and working experience. Research conducted at selected SME food industry in Parit Raja, Johor. Random sampling was used and a total of 80 survey questionnaires was distributed among employees who working in the SME food industry. The response rate was 75%. The results revealed that the attitudes on food safety have the highest level compared to the food safety knowledge and practices among employees whose involved in this research study. Besides, only food safety practices have the significant difference with the employees’ age and employees’ working experience. This quantitative case study is important to the food industry in Malaysia in order to gain awareness towards their employees in the SME food industry respectively.
