Abstract

Layout design for the supermarket really gives a big impact for the supermarket. Somehow the layout design must give impact to the path taken by the customers to ensure the smoothness of the flow of shopping time. Improving layout is need to prevent safety problem such as fall and slip problems and also hygiene problems. The purpose of this paper is to improve and suggest a new supermarket layout design for Family Store Melaka Mall Bhd towards safe and hygienic environment. Research has been conducted at Family Store Melaka Mall Bhd, qualitative approaches used which are observation and measurement, interview, and manual calculation based on production and operation management. The respondents were the managers and workers of the Family Store Melaka Mall Bhd. This research helped the management of the supermarket to rearrange the layout to increase the safety and hygiene level of the supermarket by proposing new layout design. The implications of the research are the supermarkets to reduce the compensation cost if accidents happened in the supermarket, increase the determination of the customers and workers to works and shops in the supermarket.
