Abstract

The prevalence of occupational stress among senior academician has increased among the developed and developing countries. The academician are not only burdened with teaching and learning, but also involved in research and development, publications, consultation and administrative workload. Hence, increasing workplace pressure level are very significant as well as university management has emphasized the ranking and rating system. Previous study related to happiness index and well being more focused on foreign university and RU university in Malaysia. Therefore, this study was conducted in UTHM because no research done so far in Non RU university, especially in Technical University, whereby known as MTUN (which is UTeM, UMP, UniMAP, UMP including UTHM).This study aim is to identify the level of occupational work stress among UTHM academician. The study attempt to determine the correlation between occupational work stress with academician happiness index and well being quality. A cross sectional survey was conducted and the respondents recruited by using a randomized stratified sampling method. Occupational stress were measured using Occupational Stress Inventory. A total of 669 self-administrated was distributed among academician from July to September 2017. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) 23.0. Total response rate was 45.29%. From the result, this research can conclude that the most dominant determinant H2 (0.444) shows that well being quality is the most important factor on affecting by occupational stress which describe 44.4% of correlation compared with H1 32.9% towards happiness index. This data could be a substance for implementing avoidance and control measures to reduce stress in workplace. In the conclusion, level of occupational stress among UTHM is in moderate tendency level. The important of this study was to develop a comprehensive stress management strategy and to reduce an occupational stress while to improve the quality of life of academicians in university.
