Abstract

The construction industry encourages economic growth and development in Malaysia. Unfortunately, in Malaysia, more than 50% of construction projects are experiencing an inevitable cost overrun problem where the final project cost exceeds the number of contracts. This problem has raised concern among contractors but it is still not fully investigated. This study was conducted to examine the factors that influence the cost overrun in infrastructure construction projects from the perspective of contractors and the strategies used by contractors to reduce the surplus in construction costs. Data was obtained through quantitative methods that obtained through distribution of questionnaires to G7 Contractors in Johor Bahru. The findings show that the price factor is that the rise in the price of building materials is the highest factor of excess cost in infrastructure construction projects. Additionally, the strategies that had been used by contractors to reduce cost overrun are ensuring communications between contractors and others are fine. Therefore, the contractor should be more sensitive to the cost overrun in infrastructure construction projects. This study is beneficial to the contractor in knowing the factors and strategies used in reducing the cost overrun in Malaysia. Additionally, the strategies that had been used by contractors to reduce cost overrun are ensuring communications between contractors and others are fine.
