Abstract

Precast has improved the efficiency and cost effectiveness of concrete construction while at the same time it minimizes disruptions for upgrading programs. But, there are still barriers in developing precast concrete as the main concreting method in construction projects. Cost is the major factor in undertaking construction projects. The main focus of this research is to determine the difference in cost for using precast concrete compared to cast-in-place concrete, which will be done as a case study as well as evaluating the perceptions of key industry players. In this research, mixed method research is undertaken using quantitative and case study approach. The findings of the research indicates that large structures are not suitable to be constructed as it is the main disadvantage in using precast concrete. Based on the perceptions of respondents it can be concluded that precast concrete is considered to be more expensive compared to conventional cast-in-situ concrete. However, the case study data indicated a reduction in cost for the precast concrete suspended slab as compared to the cast-in-place concrete. This calls for further detailed analysis to confirm if this is true and consequently establish firmly that the current perceptions regarding precast concrete being more expensive can be rectified.
