Abstract

Lightweight concrete can be formed from the main element of concrete with some replacement material. The awareness of lightweight concrete is increasing nowadays due to the utilisation of waste material to replace aggregate or cement component since the shortage supply of these mineral source. In this research, polystyrene material was used as partial replacement to the course aggregates. The objective of this study are to identify the suitable composition of polystyrene in concrete mixture, to investigate the strength different between polystyrene concrete and normal concrete and to identify the impact of concrete cover (C) to the strength of structural performance of polystyrene concrete. A series of reinforced concrete cylinder with reinforcement bar at the centre of the cylinder were tested in this research. There were 12 concrete cylinders are produced with two different diameter sizes, 110mm and 200mm with 300mm height and the comparison with normal concrete had been conducted to examine the performance of the lightweight concrete. In order to assess the workability of concrete mix, the slump test were conducted during the mixing process and the Brazilian test was carried out to determine the strength of the concrete cylinders. The finding of this study shows that the higher strength of polystyrene concrete contributed by 1.5% of polystyrene compared to the other proportions. Hence, all the proportion have a good workability through the slump test. Even though, strength of polystyrene concrete still does not meet the strength of normal concrete. Therefore, it is suggested to use the super plasticizer in concrete to produce a good bonding between concrete mixture in future research. Moreover, the increase of concrete cover (C) have a direct influence to the increase of structural strength. This study contribute to the optimum percentage of polystyrene to be used in concrete and the value of concrete cover (C) should be highlighted by the stakeholder in their design as it give influence to the structural strength of the structure.
