Abstract

Lightweight concrete is lighter than the conventional concrete. Lightweight concrete can be formed from the main element of concrete with some replacement material. The awareness of lightweight concrete is increasing nowadays due to the utilisation of waste material to replace aggregate or cement component since the shortage supply of these mineral sources. Due to high demand of material, the price of aggregate and cement is increasing drastically. In this research, sugarcane bagasse (SCB) fiber is used as partial replacement of coarse aggregate. The objective of this study is to identify the suitable composition of SCB fiber in concrete mixture, to identify the workability of SCB fiber in concrete mixture for building structure and to compare the structural strength of the SCB concrete with the ordinary concrete strength. A series of pilot study concrete cube with a proportion of 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.0% sugarcane bagasse fiber (SCB) determined the suitable composition for beam. There SCB concrete beams have been produced and compare with normal concrete to examine the performance of the lightweight concrete. The slump test have been conducted to produce suitable workability of concrete. Meanwhile, the three point load flexural test have been determine the comparison of strength performance of the SCB concrete beams and control concrete. The finding of this study shows that the higher strength of SCB concrete contributed by 0.50% of SCB compared to the other proportions. Hence, all the proportion have a good workability through the slump test. Meanwhile, the SCB beam also contributed 15% more strength than normal concrete. Therefore, it is suggested to use the superplasticizer in concrete to produce a good bonding between concrete mixture in future research. Further research can contribute to reduce the use of aggregates in the concrete at once can preserve natural substances for a long term. In addition, the use of waste disposal also helps in producing more economical concrete and at the same time produce lightweight concrete which has the same strength or better than ordinary concrete.
