Abstract

Concrete has extreme importance to the construction industry. Most of current concrete research focus on high-performance concrete, which its meant a cost effective material that satisfies demanding performance requirement including durability. The construction industry has led to increased demand for concrete. However, non-renewable material reduction in concrete production increases and will be end soon. The use of lightweight concrete is seen as an effective alternative by substituting concrete material to other materials without affecting the strength of the concrete structure. Therefore, plastic bubble has been used in replacing the concrete at the center of the neutral axial axis. In this research, plastic bubble used in additional of concrete beam element. The objective of this study is to identify the flexural strength of the concrete beam, to study the rate of reduction of concrete in the use of concrete bubble and the comparison between the common concrete beam and bubble concrete beam. In this study, the experiments were initiated by providing 4 beams of size 1200mm x 160mm x 160mm for normal concrete and bubble beam concrete. For concrete bubble, 2 types of samples were produced using 10 and 5 bubbles of 100mm in diameter. Then, flexural test is carried out to determine the strength of the beam against the deflection from 3-point load. At then of this study, bubble beam shown a good expectation. Both beam also had the same strength and did not significantly differ compared to ordinary concrete beam. The percentage of concrete reduction also shown a good result up to 30%. Therefore, the replacement of concrete material onto the bubble balls shows a positive result in reducing the dead weight of structures without affecting the structure of the strength. By reducing the usage of concrete, the environment was kept away from CO2 that causes of thinning the ozone layer. This study contributes to our understanding between environmental care and implementation of new technology. Bubble concrete beam can be expanding the usage of bubble concrete beam in construction industry. This study also could give the guidance for the researcher to improve the method of concrete beam structure.
