Abstract

Lightweight concrete can be formed from the main element of the concrete with some replacement material. The awareness of using lightweight concrete in the construction industry has increased due to the utilization of waste material to replace aggregate or cement component. The shortage supply of these natural sources and the high demand of the material has increased the price of the aggregate and cement leading to this research that uses polystyrene as the partial replacement of coarse aggregate. The objective of this study is to determine the composition of the polystyrene, identifying the workability of polystyrene concrete and to compare the strength performance between polystyrene concrete and normal concrete. Furthermore, a pilot test is done by performing the cube compression test on 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5% of polystyrene; it shows that 1.5% of polystyrene has the better result in terms of strength performance. Moreover, slump test was performed during pilot study and during the construction of beam to assess the concrete’s workability. After decided the polystyrene proportion through pilot study, two Normal beams and Polystyrene beams were prepared and undergone 28 days of curing before being tested using flexural test. In addition, the comparison between the two beam were carried out to determine its strength performance and it shows that the polystyrene beam displayed an acceptable results with 30% of reduction strength than the normal beams did even though the strength of polystyrene concrete still did not meet the strength of the normal concrete. Thus, it can be concluded that the optimum percentage of polystyrene is 1.5%. It is suggested to use superplasticizer to enhance the polystyrene concrete’s performance. Therefore, this study can contribute to the alternative material by replacing the main component to form a concrete and will ensure an economic factor but on the same time producing a good strength performance of the concrete structure.
