Abstract

Lightweight concrete can be formed from the main element of the concrete with some replacement material. The awareness of lightweight concrete is increasing nowadays due to the utilization of waste material to replace aggregate or cement component since the shortage supply of these mineral sources. Due to high demand of material, the price of aggregates and cement is increasing drastically. In this study, a mixture of sugarcane bagasse fiber was used as a partial replacement of coarse aggregate in lightweight concrete to determine whether there is an increase in the compressive strength of the concrete. The objectives of this study are to investigate the optimum proportion of sugarcane bagasse fiber in concrete mixture, to compare the strength of sugarcane concrete with ordinary concrete and to determine the impact of concrete cover to the strength of concrete. Due to the finding of this study shows that the higher strength of sugarcane bagasse fiber contributed by 0.50% of sugarcane bagasse fiber compared to other proportions. A series of reinforced concrete cylinder of ϕ110mm x 300mm and ϕ200mm x 300mm with concrete cover of 45mm and 90mm consisting of 20mm diameter of reinforcement bar at the center of the cylinder. There were 12 SCB concrete specimen has been produced and the optimum proportion of sugarcane bagasse fiber in concrete mixture where the percentages of sugarcane bagasse fiber used was 0.50%. Hence, all the proportion have a good workability through the slump test. Compressive strength was tested on 28 days after curing test is carried out. Meanwhile, the result of testing showed that the result for the average of compressive strength for the normal concrete ϕ110mm is 3.83 N/mm² higher than the average of compressive strength for sugarcane bagasse fiber concrete ϕ110mm is 1.85 N/mm². Even though, strength of sugarcane concrete still does not meet the strength of normal concrete. Therefore, it is suggested to use a various length of sugarcane bagasse fiber in concrete to produce a good bonding between concrete mixture in future research. Moreover, the increases of concrete cover have a direct influence to the increase of structural strength. This study contributes to be used in concrete and the value of concrete cover should be highlighted by the stakeholder in their design as it gives influence of the structural strength to the structure element in the construction.
