Abstract

Occupational stress has a negative impact on work performance, health and productivity levels for workers in the manufacturing sector. Emotional intelligence is among the variables that can reduce occupational stress at work. The main purpose of this study is to measure the level and relationship of emotional intelligence and occupational stress among manufacturing industries in Johor. The independent variables in this study are emotional intelligence consisting of four domains namely self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. While the dependent variable are the occupational stress among the manufacturing workers. This study was conducted quantitatively by using questionnaires distributed to respondents comprising workers among manufacturing industries in Johor. The population of this study was 6,700 workers. The return of the questionnaire was 256 questionnaires from 361 questionnaires in the manufacturing industry sector. The study uses Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0 to analyze data and descriptive and correlative tests used to answer questions. The results showed that the level of occupational stress in the manufacturing sector was at a low level (mean = 1.97). While the level of emotional intelligence has a high level (mean = 3.67). The result of correlation indicates there is a significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence and occupational stress (p> 0.315). Regression analysis has been done to test hypotheses with self-realization decisions and relationship management has relationships with occupational stress. While the self-management and social-awareness has no relation with the occupational stress.
